Mobius Artist Group performance with dance/installation art and live music. This is a roughly 60-minute structured improvisation with plastic objects. The piece will morph between solos, duets, quad and trio combinations of the 4 artists that include movement, sound, and performance actions. The work will be cumulative and acquire performance remnants of past actions that will serve as a sculptural backdrop as the piece progresses.

About the Artists:

Performers: Jimena Bermejo, Chris Brokaw, Sara June, Max Lord dancer/choreographer Jimena Bermejo and musician Chris Brokaw have been collaborating together since 2017, on works combining performance art, multimedia movement, and punk rock tautology. Bermejo brings a wealth of experience as a member of Mobius (Boston) and a dancer in various ensembles; Brokaw brings musical and performative experiences drawn from 20+ years performing rock music and scoring films. Together they have performed at Judson Hall (New York), Green Street Studios (Boston) and MAGMA (Gloucester); curated an evening of performance at the Distillery Gallery (South Boston); and performed a live-installation work in downtown Belfast, Northern Ireland, in coordination with BBelfast. This performance will be the premier collaboration between June/Lord and Bermejo/Brokaw, working in a series of duos, trios and quartets.

Mari Novotny-Jones Video installation

Video work of Mari Novotny-Jones will be on display in Gallery North at 11 Jane Street Art Centre during open hours: August 10 - 18th, 2019.

About the Artist:

Mari Novotny-Jones has been a member of the Mobius Artists Group in Boston since 1980. Her original performance work includes both solo and collaborative pieces. Her most recent local works include “Shrinekeepers” for 2007 Cyberarts festival as part of a collective of six women performance artists and “Harvest” for the Mobius International Festival in 2006. She has also appeared in Mobilize 2008 and Contaminate, an International Artists Festival, Boston. Novotny-Jones is on the faculty of the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts where she teaches Performance and CORE foundations classes. She is a recipient of a 2000 Tanne Foundation Artist Award for excellence in the arts. Mari also holds a M.A. in independent studies from Lesley University, Cambridge Mass. "In Praise of Shadows" is an exhibition of new luminous large scale works by Heather Hutchison debuting in upstate’s new exhibition & performance space. Accompanied by an essay by Eleanor Heartney. 


ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Heather Hutchison was born in 1964 in Philomath, Oregon and raised between there, Northern and Southern California, and just north of the Mexican border in Bisbee, Arizona. Her education as a painter began in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 1980's. Her work then lead her to New York City in 1986. Her work has been exhibited in The Corcoran Biennial in Washington, D.C., at The Brooklyn Museum, The Otis College of Art and Design, in Los Angeles, The Samuel Dorsky Museum in upstate New York, The Knoxville Museum of Art, and The Montclair Art Museum, in Montclair, NJ. Select public collections housing her work include The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, The Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY, The Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, Art in Embassies, Beijing, China, and The Gerald Schwartz Collection at Harvard University, Boston, MA. Hutchison continues her 30 year line of inquiry into light and transparency in Saugerties, NY where she has made her home and studio since 2000 with her husband, Mark Thomas Kanter, also a painter, and their son Dante.

Michael Pope is an award-winning, self-taught filmmaker/video artist born and raised in New York City. Combining live musical performance and sound effects, tableau vivant and installation elements to a feature length experimental narrative, Neovoxer was acclaimed by the Boston Globe as “An unforgettable sensory experience. A must see event" and has been referred to as "Surrealistic Lyricism" (Metalopolis) and "Nothing less than cataclysmic" (The Dig). With Neovoxer, Pope is the first American director to screen work by invitation at the Film Finale Plzen, (2004 Plzen, CZ).

11 Jane St. Art Center is a fully renovated artist-owned 19th Century brick warehouse with 2 art galleries dedicated to mid-career artists new work and works in progress, artist residencies, performances, exhibitions and classes.

Jennifer Hicks; artist, choreographer and theater maker is OWNER, CURATOR and ARTISTIC DIRECTOR of 11 Jane St. Art Center. Her background includes an MFA in Contemporary Performance from Naropa University, a BFA in Fine Arts from Tufts University, a Fine Arts Degree from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Traveling Scholars Fellowship from Tufts University, an alumni of Franklin Furnace, a long-time member of the performance collective in Boston called Mobius Artist Group and over 40 years of making art, exhibiting, performing and teaching. Jen Dragon Guest Curator of Gallery South

11 Jane St. Art Center is honored to welcome Jen Dragon as GUEST CURATOR for GALLERY SOUTH. Jen Dragon is the curator/director for Cross Contemporary Art, a fine arts organization based in the Hudson Valley. Jen Dragon represents mid-career and established artists who live and work in the Hudson Valley, Catskills and New York City region. Many of the artists who show with Cross Contemporary Art have exhibited internationally and have their artwork represented in museum collections. Since opening in 2014, Jen has curated more than 58 exhibitions, exhibited over 87 fine artists, presented 3 village wide sculpture festivals and installed more than 945 artworks.
